December 13, 2016 | The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced last week that it has selected William E. Easterling to serve as Assistant Director for Geosciences and head of the Geosciences Directorate. The GEO directorate provides about 61 percent of the federal funding for fundamental research at academic institutions in the geosciences, including atmospheric, Earth, ocean, and polar research.
Dr. Easterling comes to NSF from Pennsylvania State University, a UCAR member institution, where he has been dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences since 2007. He will begin his NSF appointment in June 2017. The NSF news release has more information about Easterling and the vital role NSF GEO plays in assuring U.S. leadership in the Earth sciences.
