Capitol Hill Visits Essay Contest - 2017

Calling all students in the Atmospheric Sciences

Curious about the intersection of science and policy?
Want to get a close-up view of Washington D.C.?

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research is looking for up to six undergrads or graduate students to accompany UCAR leadership to Washington D.C. May 9–11, 2017. Members of the UCAR Board of Trustees and the UCAR President' Advisory Committee on University Relations (PACUR) will be your hosts and guides for the unique opportunity.

In Washington, you will have the chance to visit Capitol Hill and meet members of Congress and their staffs and attend a special briefing by Hill staffers on how Congress works. You will also sit in on briefings from senior leadership in areas of weather, water, and climate.

If your essay is selected, UCAR will cover round-trip travel expenses from your location to Washington (flight, three nights hotel and per diem for meals and incidental expenses).

If this opportunity sounds exciting,  we want to hear from you. Please submit an essay of no more than 500 words that answers the following questions:

  1. Why is atmospheric science important to the United States?

  2. What will this opportunity mean to your education and future career?

Along with your essay be sure to include the following (not included in the word count):

  • Your name
  • Your area of research
  • Your university
  • Your contact information
